Plastic products are ubiquitous in our daily lives. Convenient shopping bags, disposable tableware, food packaging, etc. have brought us great convenience. However, the accumulation of plastic waste and the spread of microplastics pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. How to effectively address plastic pollution has become a global concern. Among them, "using biodegradable materials" and "improving plastic recycling rates" are currently the two most discussed solutions.

1、 Biodegradable materials: bringing plastics back to nature
Biodegradable materials refer to materials that can be decomposed into carbon dioxide, water, and other harmless substances under the action of microorganisms in nature. Common biodegradable materials include polylactic acid (PLA), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and polybutylene adipate/terephthalate (PBAT).
(1) Advantages
1. Reduce microplastic pollution: Traditional plastics produce microplastics during degradation, which can enter soil and water bodies, and even be ingested by organisms, affecting the ecosystem. And biodegradable materials can be completely degraded, avoiding the production of microplastics.
2. Simplify garbage disposal: Products made from biodegradable materials do not require complex sorting and recycling after disposal. They can be composted together with other organic waste, which is both convenient and environmentally friendly.
3. Reduce carbon emissions: Many biodegradable materials come from renewable resources such as corn, sugarcane, etc. In the production and degradation process, the overall carbon dioxide emissions are low, which helps to mitigate climate change.
(1) Challenge
1. High cost: Currently, the production cost of biodegradable materials is relatively high, which limits their large-scale application.
2. Degradation condition requirements: Biodegradable materials require specific environmental conditions to effectively degrade, such as appropriate temperature, humidity, and microbial communities. If suitable composting facilities are lacking, the degradation rate of these materials in the natural environment may be slower.

2、 Plastic recycling: extending the life cycle of plastics
Improving the recycling rate of traditional plastics is another important way to reduce plastic pollution. Through classification, cleaning, and reprocessing, discarded plastics can be transformed into new products.
(1) Advantages
1. Resource conservation: Recycling can reduce reliance on non renewable resources such as oil and save energy.
2. Reduce waste accumulation: Increasing recycling rates can reduce the accumulation of plastic waste and lower pollution to land and oceans.

(2) Challenge
1. Difficult to recycle: There are many types of plastics with different properties, and the recycling process requires careful classification, otherwise it will affect the quality of recycled plastics.
2. The problem of microplastics still exists: even after recycling, traditional plastics may still produce microplastics during use and degradation, which cannot completely solve the problem of environmental pollution.

Comprehensive comparison: a two pronged solution
Faced with the complexity of plastic pollution, a single solution may not be effective. Both "biodegradable materials" and "plastic recycling" have their own advantages, and combining the strengths of both may be a more realistic choice.
For disposable items: For difficult to recycle disposable plastic products such as plastic bags, tableware, etc., using biodegradable materials can effectively reduce environmental pollution.
For durable goods: For plastic products with long service life and high value, such as household appliances, automotive parts, etc., strengthening recycling can save resources and reduce environmental burden.
Conclusion: Working together to achieve a green future
The solution to plastic pollution cannot be achieved without the joint participation of the government, enterprises, and the public. The government can formulate policies to encourage the research and application of biodegradable materials, and improve the recycling system; Enterprises can innovate technologies to reduce the production cost of biodegradable materials and improve the efficiency of recycling processes; The public can start from themselves, reduce the use of disposable plastics, and actively participate in garbage classification and recycling.
By comprehensively utilizing biodegradable materials and improving plastic recycling rates, we are expected to gradually alleviate the environmental pressure caused by plastic pollution and create a better tomorrow for the future of the earth.
